Help

Set up ONYX, fix connection problems, or ask us about your receiver.

Setup & troubleshooting

Most connection problems are fixed by one of these four steps.

Turn on Network Standby so ONYX can power the receiver on

When a receiver goes into standby, its network connection switches off unless Network Standby is enabled. Turn it on in the receiver's on-screen menu:

Setup → Hardware → Power Management → Network Standby → On

ONYX can then power the receiver on over Wi-Fi, and it reconnects in under a second when you open the app.

ONYX can't find my receiver (mesh Wi-Fi, guest networks, isolation)

Your phone and receiver must be on the same network and subnet (for example both on 192.168.1.x).

  • Turn off AP isolation or client isolation in your router or mesh settings.
  • Don't put the receiver or your phone on a guest Wi-Fi network.
  • On mesh systems, a phone on a satellite node and a receiver wired to the main router is fine, as long as isolation is off.
Connect by IP address (port 60128)

Some routers block the broadcast ONYX uses to find receivers. Look up the receiver's IP address in your router's device list and enter it in ONYX under Manual IP.

Onkyo, Integra and Pioneer network receivers use the eISCP protocol on TCP port 60128. ONYX uses that port automatically.

Receiver stopped responding after a power cut or router restart

The receiver's network module can hang while the amplifier itself works normally. Hold the front-panel ON/STANDBY button for about 10 seconds until REBOOT appears on the display.

This restarts the network module without clearing your speaker calibration or Dirac Live settings.

Setup

Does ONYX require an account or internet?

No. ONYX talks to your receiver directly over your home Wi-Fi. There is no cloud server, no account or password, and no trackers, ads or analytics. Commands never leave your home network.

Why is ONYX faster than the official apps?

The manufacturer apps load embedded web pages and can take several seconds to reconnect. ONYX keeps a direct connection to the receiver on your local network: a volume command takes about 14 ms, and the app reconnects in under a second.

How do I connect ONYX to my receiver?

Open the app while your phone or tablet is on the same home network as the receiver. ONYX finds it automatically.

If it doesn't show up, enter the receiver's IP address under Manual IP. See Setup & troubleshooting for common fixes.

What is Network Standby and why should it be enabled?

It keeps the receiver's network connection alive in standby, so ONYX can power it on over Wi-Fi and connect immediately. On most models: Setup → Hardware → Power Management → Network Standby → On.

Does ONYX work if my receiver is wired to Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi?

Yes. Ethernet is the most reliable option. The receiver and your phone just need to be on the same home network.

Which receivers work, and what if mine isn't listed?

ONYX works with network-connected Onkyo, Integra and Pioneer AV receivers made since 2011 (TX-NR, TX-RZ, TX-SR, VSX, SC and DRX series). See the compatibility list. Support for more brands, including Denon, Marantz, Yamaha and Sony, is in the works.

Not sure about your model? Send us the details and we'll confirm.

Which phones, tablets and computers does ONYX run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS 15 or later, Macs with Apple Silicon, and Android phones and tablets running Android 7.0 or later. The Home Screen widgets, Lock Screen Live Activity and Dynamic Island controls need iOS 17.

Does ONYX work away from home or on mobile data?

No. ONYX talks to the receiver over your home network only, which is what makes it fast and private. Your phone needs to be on the same Wi-Fi as the receiver.

Can I try ONYX without a receiver?

Yes. Turn on Demo Mode under Settings → Equipment. ONYX then runs against a simulated receiver, so you can try every screen.

Is ONYX made by Onkyo, Integra or Pioneer?

No. ONYX is an independent app. It uses the network control protocol built into these receivers and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the manufacturers.

Everyday use

What is the difference between Basic and Advanced mode?

Basic shows what you need day to day: power, volume, inputs and Now Playing. Advanced adds zones, sound and EQ panels, signal details and routines. Switch at the top of Settings at any time.

How does phone volume button control work?

With ONYX Pro, your phone's volume buttons control the receiver while ONYX is open. Each press steps the volume by 0.5, 1 or 2 dB (your choice), with a light haptic tap and without the phone's own volume overlay, so you can adjust it without looking.

How does the Vocal (dialogue) button work?

Tapping VOCAL cycles the receiver's dialogue level: Flat (0 dB), +3 dB for a light lift, and +6 dB for quiet late-night viewing. Your speaker calibration isn't changed.

What does the Dimmer button do?

DIM cycles the receiver's front display through Bright, Dim, Dark and Off, which helps in a dark room.

Can I control Zone 2 and Zone 3 separately?

Yes. Choose Main, Zone 2 or Zone 3 in the remote. Power, volume, mute and input then apply to that zone only.

What is the difference between AVR mode and TV (CEC) mode?

In AVR mode, the arrow pad navigates the receiver's on-screen menus. In TV (CEC) mode (ONYX Pro), it sends HDMI-CEC commands to your TV or streaming box through the receiver, so you don't need the TV remote for menus.

What does the HDMI output button do?

On receivers with two HDMI outputs, HDMI switches between Main (for example your TV), Sub (for example a projector) and Main + Sub. Part of ONYX Pro.

How do tuner presets work?

TUNER opens the tuner with a frequency readout, scan, tune up/down and 40 preset slots. Long-press a slot to give it a name. Part of ONYX Pro.

Can I set a maximum volume?

Yes. Set Max Volume Limit under Settings → Audio & DSP. It's shown in dB, and the on-screen buttons, your phone's volume buttons and one-tap routines all stop at it. Free.

Can I change how much each volume tap moves?

Yes. Volume Step Size under Settings → Audio & DSP lets you pick 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 dB per tap. Some receivers only step in whole dB; on those, 0.5 dB works as 1.0 dB.

Can I rename or hide inputs?

Yes. Under Settings → Equipment you can give inputs friendly names (for example "Apple TV" instead of "CBL/SAT"), hide the ones you never use and change their order.

Can I make the text and buttons bigger?

Yes. Settings → Appearance has three sizes: Compact, Comfort and Jumbo. ONYX also follows your phone's text size setting.

Pro & pricing

Is ONYX free?

Yes, the core app is free forever, with no ads and no account. That includes power for Main, Zone 2 and Zone 3, volume and mute, a maximum volume limit and step size, input switching and renaming, Basic and Advanced modes, the Vocal button, the display dimmer, demo mode and the Obsidian Black theme.

See ONYX Pro for details.

Is there a subscription?

No. Pro is a single payment. Future Pro updates included.

Can I restore Pro on another device?

Yes. On iPhone, iPad and Mac, Pro is tied to your Apple ID and supports Family Sharing. On Android it's tied to your Google Play account. Tap Restore Purchases in Settings on the new device.

What data does ONYX collect?

None. ONYX collects no personal data, IP addresses, email addresses or diagnostics. All communication is between your phone and your receiver on your home network.

How do the iOS widgets and Dynamic Island work?

Part of ONYX Pro, iOS 17 or later. Add an ONYX widget to your Home Screen for volume steps, presets and scenes. A Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island lets you change the volume and mute without opening the app.

Can I get a refund?

Purchases go through the App Store or Google Play, so refunds follow their policies. Request one through Apple or Google.

Sound

Does ONYX show Dolby Atmos and DTS:X?

Yes. ONYX reads the incoming audio format from the receiver and shows the format, sample rate and active speaker layout (for example 5.1.2 or 7.1.4).

What is the Sound Mode Advisor?

It looks at the format that's playing and suggests a suitable listening mode, for example Dolby Surround for films or Pure Direct for stereo music.

How does the room SPL meter work?

Part of ONYX Pro. It uses your phone's microphone to show the sound level in your room, with A-weighting (dialogue) and C-weighting (bass) and a 75 dB reference mark for level matching.

How does Dirac Live slot switching work?

On receivers with Dirac Live (such as the Onkyo TX-RZ50 and TX-RZ70, Integra DRX-3.4 and up, and Pioneer VSX-LX305 and up), ONYX Pro switches between Dirac slots 1, 2, 3 or bypass from the quick trims bar, so you can compare filters quickly.

Routines

How do scenes and one-tap routines work?

There are two kinds. The quick scenes on the main display (Cinema, Dialogue, Night and Pure) adjust the listening mode and trims in one tap; tap the active one again to go back to your previous settings.

The one-tap routines (Movie Night, Gaming, Vinyl Hi-Fi and All Off) do several steps in a row: power on, pick the input, set the volume (never above your volume limit), the listening mode and trims. ONYX shows each step as it runs.

How does Kids Remote Mode work?

Kids Remote Mode (ONYX Pro) locks your receiver controls behind a 4-digit Parental PIN. When active, it enforces a strict maximum volume ceiling and hides secondary zone routing to prevent accidental speaker damage during family gatherings or movie nights.

What is the Profile Snapshot Vault?

Profile Snapshot Vault (ONYX Pro) lets you save complete receiver configurations—including speaker channel levels, Dirac Live filter slot assignments, and crossover settings—into named snapshots. If receiver settings get altered or reset, you can restore your preferred calibration in a single tap.

Tablets

Does ONYX work on iPad and Android tablets?

Yes. The free version uses a centered single-column remote on tablets. ONYX Pro adds a wide two-column layout with volume, inputs and the speaker view side by side, and a 3-column rack layout for landscape screens.

Can I leave ONYX running on a wall-mounted tablet?

Yes. ONYX stays connected while it's open. The screen follows your tablet's own sleep setting, so for a permanent panel set Auto-Lock (iPad) or Screen timeout (Android) to a longer time or Never, and keep the tablet on power.
