1. Agreement
These terms are an agreement between you and the independent developer of the ONYX app ("ONYX", "the app", "we", "us") and the onyxremote.app website. By downloading, installing or using ONYX, or buying ONYX Pro, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
If you download ONYX from the Apple App Store or Google Play, the store's own terms also apply. If those terms conflict with these, the store's terms apply to the extent of the conflict.
2. Your licence
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use ONYX on devices you own or control, as allowed by the store you got it from. We keep all rights in ONYX, including its code, design, text and graphics.
You must not, except where the law allows it:
- copy, modify, sell, rent, sublicense or distribute the app;
- reverse-engineer, decompile or try to extract its source code;
- bypass the ONYX Pro unlock or any other technical protection;
- use the app to damage, disrupt or gain unauthorised access to any device or network.
We may end this licence if you break these terms. You can stop using ONYX at any time by deleting it.
3. Compatibility
ONYX is designed for network-connected Onkyo, Integra and Pioneer receivers. Features depend on your receiver model, its firmware, its settings and your home network. Not every feature works with every receiver, and receiver firmware updates or router settings can change what works.
The core app is free so that you can confirm it works with your receiver and network before you buy ONYX Pro. The compatibility list is a guide based on our testing and user reports; it is not a guarantee for any specific unit, firmware version or network.
ONYX needs your device and receiver on the same local network. It does not work over the internet or mobile data. We are not responsible for your Wi-Fi, router, mesh system, receiver firmware or network configuration.
4. Volume and equipment safety
ONYX sends commands to your receiver; your receiver decides how to carry them out. Network delays, interference or receiver behaviour can cause commands to arrive late, more than once, or not at all.
- You are responsible for choosing safe listening levels and for protecting your hearing, other people's hearing and your equipment.
- The Max Volume Limit is a convenience feature, not a safety device. It limits commands sent from ONYX only; it does not stop volume changes from your receiver's own remote, front panel, other apps or connected devices.
- The Room SPL meter uses your phone's microphone, which is not a calibrated instrument. Readings are approximate and are not suitable for health, safety, legal or professional measurement purposes.
- Sound modes, trims, Dirac Live slot switching, test tones and similar features change your receiver's settings. Check your settings and keep your own records of any calibration you rely on.
5. ONYX Pro purchases
- ONYX Pro is an optional one-time in-app purchase that unlocks extra features in the app. It is not a subscription. Future Pro updates included.
- "Future Pro updates included" means that if we release updates to Pro features, Pro owners receive them at no extra cost. It does not oblige us to release any particular feature, platform or update, or to support any particular device or receiver.
- The price is shown in the store before you buy and may vary by country and change over time. Price changes do not affect purchases already made.
- Apple or Google processes the payment. Your purchase is linked to your Apple ID or Google account and can be restored with Restore Purchases in the app. Family Sharing is available where Apple supports it.
- Pro features are described on the Pro page and in the app at the time you buy. Some Pro features depend on your receiver or device (for example, Dirac Live needs a Dirac-equipped receiver, and iOS widgets need iOS 17).
6. Refunds
Because purchases are made through Apple or Google, they hold your payment and process refunds. We cannot see your payment details or issue refunds ourselves.
- Apple: request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Google Play: follow Google Play's refund process in your Google account.
ONYX Pro is digital content that is delivered and unlocked immediately when you buy it, with your consent. To the extent the law allows, this means a cooling-off or withdrawal right does not apply once Pro has been unlocked. Because the free app lets you check compatibility first, we do not consider incompatibility you could have discovered before buying to be a defect.
If Pro does not work as described, please contact us first at support@onyxremote.app so we can try to fix it. If a refund is granted or a payment is reversed or charged back, Pro may be removed from your account. We may also remove Pro if it was obtained through fraud or by bypassing the store.
7. Updates and changes
We may update ONYX to fix problems, improve it, or respond to changes in operating systems, stores or receiver firmware. Updates may add, change or remove features. We will not remove a core Pro feature you bought unless we have to for legal, security, platform or technical reasons outside our reasonable control.
We may stop supporting older operating system versions or devices, and we may stop offering ONYX in the future. If we do, the app may keep working on your device, but we do not promise it will.
8. Independence and trademarks
ONYX is an independent app. It is not made, authorised, sponsored or endorsed by Onkyo, Integra, Pioneer, Premium Audio Company, VOXX International, Dolby, DTS, Dirac, Apple, Google or any receiver manufacturer. Product names, logos and brands are the property of their owners and are used only to describe compatibility.
9. Disclaimer
To the maximum extent permitted by law, ONYX and the website are provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise that ONYX will be uninterrupted, error-free, compatible with every receiver or network, or that it will meet your particular needs, and we exclude all warranties, guarantees and representations not expressly stated in these terms. Nothing in this section limits rights you have under consumer law that cannot be excluded (see section 12).
10. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law:
- We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for loss of data, settings, calibration, profits or enjoyment, arising from your use of, or inability to use, ONYX or the website.
- We are not liable for damage to your receiver, speakers, other equipment or hearing arising from volume levels, settings or commands you choose to send, from your receiver's behaviour, or from network problems, except where caused by our gross negligence or wilful misconduct.
- Our total liability to you for all claims relating to ONYX or these terms is limited to the amount you paid for ONYX Pro in the 12 months before the claim, or, if you have not bought Pro, R200 (or its equivalent in your currency).
These limits do not apply to liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for gross negligence.
11. Indemnity
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to compensate us for reasonable losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your breach of these terms, your misuse of ONYX, or your use of it in breach of any law or of another person's rights.
12. Your consumer rights
If you are a consumer, you may have rights under consumer protection law that cannot be excluded or limited by contract, including, in South Africa, under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 and the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002, and in other countries, under your local law. Nothing in these terms takes away those rights. Where a term in these conditions is not allowed by such law, it applies only to the extent the law permits.
13. Disputes and governing law
If you have a problem, please contact us first at support@onyxremote.app and give us 30 days to try to resolve it. Most issues can be fixed quickly this way.
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa. Subject to any mandatory consumer law that gives you the right to bring proceedings where you live, the courts of South Africa have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from ONYX or these terms. You may also approach the National Consumer Commission or a relevant ombud where the law allows.
14. Apple App Store terms
If you got ONYX from the Apple App Store:
- These terms are between you and us, not Apple. We, not Apple, are responsible for ONYX and its content.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for ONYX.
- If ONYX fails to meet any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for ONYX.
- Apple is not responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party relating to ONYX, including product liability claims, claims that ONYX fails to meet legal or regulatory requirements, and consumer protection claims.
- If a third party claims that ONYX or your use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are responsible for dealing with that claim.
- You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
15. General
- Changes to these terms: we may update these terms. We will change the date at the top, and for significant changes we will give notice in the app or on this page. Continuing to use ONYX after a change means you accept the updated terms.
- Severability: if any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.
- No waiver: if we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- Transfer: we may transfer our rights and obligations under these terms to another organisation that takes over ONYX. You may not transfer yours.
- Entire agreement: these terms, the Privacy Policy and the applicable store terms are the whole agreement between you and us about ONYX.
