Privacy Policy
The short version
The ONYX app does not collect, store or send us any personal information. It talks only to your receiver on your home network. Your settings stay on your device. If you email us, we use your email only to reply.
This policy explains how the independent developer of the ONYX app and the onyxremote.app website ("ONYX", "we", "us") handles information. It covers the ONYX app on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android, and this website. We follow South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and, for users in the EU and UK, the GDPR.
1. What the app collects
Nothing that identifies you. The app has no accounts, no sign-in, no advertising, no analytics and no crash-reporting services. It does not collect your name, email address, contacts, location, device or advertising identifiers, or how you use the app.
2. Your home network
ONYX controls your receiver directly over your local network:
- It sends a discovery message on your local network to find compatible receivers.
- It connects to your receiver on TCP port 60128 (eISCP), or the Pioneer control port on older Pioneer models, to send commands such as power, volume and input.
These commands go from your device to your receiver and nowhere else. ONYX does not use any cloud server or relay.
3. Information stored on your device
To remember your setup, ONYX stores these on your device only:
- Your receiver's IP address, model name and connection history.
- Your settings, such as theme, mode, volume limit, volume step size, input names and which inputs are hidden, layout and saved profiles.
- Whether ONYX Pro is unlocked.
On iPhone and iPad, some of this is shared with the ONYX widgets and Live Activity through an on-device app group so they can show the current volume. None of it is sent to us. Deleting the app deletes this information. It may be included in your own device backups (for example iCloud or Google backup), which are handled by Apple or Google under their policies.
4. Microphone (Room SPL meter)
The Room SPL meter, part of ONYX Pro, asks for microphone access the first time you use it. ONYX uses the microphone only while the meter is open, to calculate the sound level in your room. The audio is processed on your device in real time and is never recorded, saved or sent anywhere. You can turn off microphone access at any time in your device settings; everything else in ONYX keeps working.
5. Permissions
- Local network (iOS) and network access (Android): to find and control your receiver.
- Wi-Fi multicast (Android): to receive replies when ONYX searches for receivers.
- Microphone: only for the Room SPL meter, as described above.
6. Purchases
ONYX Pro is sold through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Apple or Google processes your payment under their own privacy policies. We do not receive your name, email address or card details. The store tells the app only whether Pro has been purchased so it can be unlocked and restored.
7. When you contact us
If you email us or use the receiver request form (which opens your own email app), we receive your email address and whatever you choose to include, such as your receiver model. We use this only to answer you and to test compatibility. We keep support emails for up to 24 months and then delete them, or sooner if you ask. We never sell or share them, and we never add you to a mailing list.
8. This website
The website uses no cookies, analytics or tracking. Pages load fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser sends your IP address to Google when you visit; Google's privacy policy applies to that. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs (such as IP address and pages requested) for security and to keep the site running.
9. Children
ONYX is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
10. Your rights
Under POPIA and the GDPR you can ask what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to how we use it. In practice the only personal information we could hold is a support email you sent us. Email privacy@onyxremote.app and we will respond within 30 days.
If you are not happy with our response, you can complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa) at inforegulator.org.za, or to your local data protection authority.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects what the app collects, we will also mention it in the app's release notes before it takes effect.
